What is a Certified Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Technologist?
Certified MRI Technologists operate sophisticated MRI equipment to help physicians, and other healthcare practitioners diagnose and treat patients. Magnetic resonance imaging produces multiple cross-sectional images to create a three dimensional image. MRI technologist must take a national exam to become certified.

Is the MRI Technologist Profession a growing career?

Employment of MRI technologists is projected to grow faster than average; those with knowledge of more than one diagnostic imaging procedure will have the best employment opportunities. Employment is expected to increase by about 17 percent from 2008-2018, faster than the average for all occupations. As the population grows and ages, there will be increasing demand for diagnostic imaging. With age comes increased incidence of illness and injury which requires diagnostic imaging for diagnosis. In addition to diagnosis, diagnostic imaging is used to evaluate the progress of disease treatment. With the increasing success of medical technologies in treating disease, imaging will increasingly be needed to monitor progress of treatment. A number of new jobs will be found in physicians offices and imaging centers. In addition to job growth, job openings will also arise from the need to replace MRI technologists who leave the occupation.

What are the work conditions of an MRI Technologist?
Work environment is in a medical setting. Physical stamina is important in this occupation because MRI technologists tend to be on their feet for long periods of time and may need to lift or turn disabled patients.

Most full-time MRI technologists work about 40 hours a week. They may have to work in the evening, weekend, or on-call hours. Some MRI technologists work part time for one employer or may travel to and from facilities.

MRI technologists should be sensitive to patients' physical and psychological needs. They need to be detailed, follow instructions, and work as a team. In addition, MRI technologists must operate complicated equipment that requires mechanical ability and manual dexterity.

The CNI College MRI Technologist Program is a 1720 hour diploma program.

CNI has a Career Services Department that offers placement assistance for all students that successfully complete the MRI Technologist Program in California. However, we cannot guarantee employment.
